Living The Good Life in a good society

The Aims of Education

Education should prepare us for successful careers, for the work of making a better society, and for living our lives fully and well. But even those educational institutions that succeed in preparing young people for careers neglect the other two critically important tasks. The consequences are disturbing:

  • People lack understanding of the principles and political forms that make for a just, wholesome, vigorous society
  • People lose a commitment to building and maintaining democratic institutions
  • People live lives hollowed out by consumerism and passive entertainment served up by increasingly seductive media
  • People are unable to distinguish between true statements and manipulation in their media consumption
  • People no longer participate in voluntary organizations, leading to a steep decline in social cohesion
  • People suffer from what sociologists and public health experts call an epidemic of loneliness

The best and fullest education provides powerful antidotes to these maladies but it's not easy to find. Would you like to claim an educational experience like this for yourself? Whether you’re a young person recently graduated from college or an older lifelong learner, you might be hungry for guided study that opens paths to a full and meaningful life and that prepares you for the important role of engaged citizen.

Good Life Tutorials

If you’re highly motivated to claim an educational experience of this kind, Terry Grundy is ready to provide you with personalized tutorials, in person or online, based on close reading of important texts that explore how to live the good life in a good society. Tutorial sessions are rich in shared reflection and dialogue, the ideal way to explore classical texts that have sustained individuals and societies for centuries and contemporary texts that challenge and inspire us to this day. Reading, reflecting, discussing – education at its best!

Study topics, time commitments, and financial terms are negotiable. Motivation is key.
